With reference to Sir Andrew Caldecott's
confidential despatch dated the 21st December, 1936,
and to your confidential (2) despatch dated the 10th
February, 1937, on the subject of the War Memorial
Nursing Home, I have the honour to inform you that
the Committee of Management of the Home has now
applied to this Government for payment of the maximum
grant of $15,000 in respect of the current year.
2.
Actual cash subscribed for the Endowment
Fund on the 31st March, 1937, amounted to $218,000,
and a further $77,500 had been promised for payment
over the years 1937 to 1940 inclusive. The Committee
expects that the full amount of $500,000 will have
been received or promised by the end of this year and
the Chairman Sir V. I. Grayburn, manager of the Hong Kong
and Shanghai Banking Corporation, has offered his
personal guarantee that this will be the case.
3.
In the circumstances, and in view of the
urgent need of this institution for funds the Finance
Committee, who have been consulted, have agreed
informally to the payment of the full contribution
in respect of 1937.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
